Beneath the Wood is a Viva! award-winning vegan sanctuary based in Wales that provides permanent homes for dogs with behaviour issues, pigs, sheep, cats and horses.
Sasha Bennett set up Beneath the Wood in 2009 when she moved from Bristol to a 15-acre site in Ceredigion, nestled in beautiful rolling hills midway between the towns of Lampeter and Tregaron.
THANK YOU SASHA
In April 2018 we rescued a 3-month-old piglet we named Laces for her love of chewing shoes. She was listed free on classified ads as 'friend or food'. Shortly after we rescued a 6-month-old male called Rodney in the same position. We raised them and showed them kindness for over a year. While we could save them from slaughter we could not give them their best life, so after discussing it with Beneath The Wood Sanctuary, a fundraiser was started to fence an empty field at the sanctuary they now call home, opening the door for pigs in a similar situation.
THE 53 PIGS
In 2019 Beneath the Wood were involved in a high-profile case that rescued #53 pigs from truly horrifying conditions at an illegal slaughterhouse in Pembrokeshire. It meant Beneath the Wood tripled the size of the sanctuary’s dependents overnight, and they now have over 90 pigs, and over 135 animals in total. The cost of caring for and feeding so many animals is a huge challenge.
They also do work in rehabilitating dogs with behaviour issues – first identifying and then alleviating their problems. Like the pigs, a lot of these dogs have been saved from being put to sleep … and they have thrived since arriving at Beneath the Wood.
Resident dogs are not able to be rehomed because of behaviour issues. They have come from other rescues or from vets. Cats and other farmed animals have come from local farmers or people in the local community. Most of the animals will stay there for life as a safe haven.
They work with the animals in a positive way to help them overcome any problems. They help to build their confidence so they can enjoy life. They also spend time campaigning for a cruelty free world. They are a strictly no-kill sanctuary.

Oak arrived at Beneath the Wood via the pound and emergency kennels. He didn’t like other dogs and wasn’t too keen on men either, but he is improving all the time. He is a very lively presence at the sanctuary.
SQUIDGY
One of the original #53 pigs, Squidgy is so called because he has the most squidgy face and enormous tusks. He is one of a group of five very large boys who believe they rule the roost at Beneath the Wood.
TALA
Tala came to Beneath the Wood as an underweight lamb … but she prospered at the sanctuary alongside her friend Pixie. She is now part of a gang with Odin, Paddy and Haven. Her name means Goddess of the Evening and Morning Stars!
