Contrary to what many believe, crabs absolutely feel pain. Just like other animals, crabs have complex nervous systems that allow them to experience pain. This misconception leads to their mistreatment, such as being shipped alive to homes for cooking. While countries like Norway, Switzerland, and New Zealand recognise this and protect crabs under animal welfare laws, the UK does not include them in its Animal Welfare Act. As a result, people can treat crabs without considering the suffering they endure, with no legal consequences.
